Best PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs compatible with PS5 expansion slot. Compared by price per TB, sustained read speeds, and customer rating. Live Amazon prices.
The PS5 M.2 slot accepts PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs in the M.2 2280 form factor with sustained sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or higher. The PS5's controller caps sustained speeds at approximately 5,500 MB/s — any faster drive saturates the interface without performance benefits.
A heatsink is strongly recommended. The PS5 expansion slot cover provides minimal airflow, and sustained writes (large game installations, transfers) can cause thermal throttling without proper cooling. Drives ship with or without integrated heatsinks; both work, but heatsinked variants reduce installation friction.
Sony has validated dozens of drives — but in practice, any PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 2280 drive that meets the 5,500 MB/s threshold works. We've filtered the list below to PS5-compatible options ranked by price per terabyte.

Every drive on this list is PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 2280 with 5,500+ MB/s sustained read — meeting Sony's official PS5 SSD requirements. Drives are sorted by price per terabyte, the metric that matters most during the 2026 NAND shortage.
Customer rating reflects the aggregate score across all Amazon reviews. TBW endurance is the manufacturer warranty rating in terabytes written — even 600 TBW typically lasts 8-10 years of normal PS5 gaming use.
